4 priority areas for our packaging!

  1. The design of our packaging

When a new product is born at Velāvi, we take into account the environmental impact of its packaging from the start of the project.

Questions we ask ourselves such as: should we use this or that material?, is it recycled and/or recyclable?, should we put in place over-packaging?...

With each new production, this subject is re-discussed so that we can challenge ourselves and improve from year to year.

In our current range, we have two types of packaging:

  • The tubes:

These are made of polyethylene (PE). They have the particularity of having been manufactured from 50% PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) material, that is to say that 50% of their weight contains recycled material from plastics already used by consumers.

The associated cap is made of virgin polypropylene (PP).

The combination of the PE tube and the PP cap means that the packaging of our tubes is mostly recyclable.

  • Glass jars:

These are made of glass. They have the particularity of having been manufactured from 90% recycled material (60% PCR and 30% PIR (Post Industrial Recycling)).

The associated cover is made of polypropylene (PP) made from 100% PIR plastic material, meaning that 100% of its weight contains plastic material from industries that has not been used by consumers.

To this, we had to add extra packaging. A cardboard box made from recycled material was added to protect our glass jar and thus avoid breakage and therefore additional waste.

The combination of the glass jar, the PP cap and the cardboard overwrap means that the packaging of our jars is mostly recyclable.

  1. The sorting gesture

Since March 9, 2023, the affixing of sorting instructions on packaging has been a legal obligation under the AGEC law.

Therefore, on each Velāvi product you will find the applicable Info-sorting marking.

We notice that there are still too many doubts about the sorting gesture, so here are some tips to apply at home with the packaging of our products and of course with all those of our daily life:

- Do not wash your packaging before sorting it

- Leave the caps attached to your plastic bottles, they can also be recycled!

- Do not nest the packaging together

- Do not tear/crumple your papers, they will be better captured at the sorting center

  1. The benefits of sorting, recycling and the circular economy

They are still little known, but here are a few lines of the main environmental benefits of sorting and recycling:

  • Limited impact on the environment and biodiversity:
    • Saving natural resources by reducing the extraction of virgin materials.
    • Energy saving by reducing CO2 emissions.
    • Limiting pollution by avoiding landfilling and incineration of waste.
    • Preservation of biodiversity and natural spaces by avoiding abandoned waste.
  • The creation of new packaging or objects from recycled material (like with Velāvi products 😉)
  1. Our commitment to the issue of packaging

In addition to our commitment to the environment and the points noted above, Velāvi is a COSMOS ORGANIC certified range by Ecocert. One of the requirements of the standard is compliance with article 8.3 relating to the packaging of our products (minimum % recycled material, list of prohibited substances, etc.).

We are also members of CITEO, a company whose mission is to reduce the environmental impact of packaging and paper.
